Spot fines for illegal building material

Builders and housholders now face £100 on-the-spot fine if they illegally leave building materials outside properties.

The council is issuing a reminder that by law any material left on the public highway - roads, pavements or verges - needs to have a licence.

Charges vary depending on how long material is left out.

Council street scene enforcement officers warn they will now be taking tough action against anyone flouting the law. In more serious cases, offenders can end up in the Magistrates' Court.
